Dame Fiona Caldicott & Professor Jonathan Montgomery to take part in a special plenary session at RDF19.

The NHS R&D Forum are delighted to announce that Dame Fiona Caldicott & Professor Jonathan Montgomery will be taking part in a very special Plenary Session at RDF19, the 2019 Annual NHS R&D Forum. Dr Nicola Williams, Chair of the Programme Content Group and National Director of Support & Delivery, Health and Care Research Wales said “We are delighted to welcome Dame Fiona Caldicott to the conference in 2019. She will be interviewed on stage by Professor Jonathan Montgomery about the origins of the Caldicott guardians, their importance in research and the future challenges of protecting the use of patient information.”

Dame Fiona Caldicott MA FRCP FRCPsych
Dame Fiona Caldicott is the National Data Guardian for Health and Care and (until March 2019) Chair of the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
In 2016 she published a review of data security and consent and opt-outs, which was commissioned by the Secretary of State for Health. She has previously led two other independent reviews, which were reported in 1997 and 2013 and led, among other outcomes to the creation and appointment of ‘Caldicott Guardians’ in all provider organisations in the NHS.
Dame Fiona worked as a Consultant and Senior Clinical Lecturer in Psychotherapy for the South Birmingham Mental Health NHS Trust.
She was also Unit General Manager, a Clinical Director and the Medical Director in that Trust. As President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (1993-1996) she was also Chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (1995-1996).
Dame Fiona was Principal of Somerville College in the University of Oxford from 1996-2010 and served as a Pro-Vice-Chancellor with responsibility for Personnel and Equality in the University for a number of years.

Jonathan Montgomery is Professor of Health Care Law at University College London and chair of the Health Research Authority. He is a member of the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies and a non-executive director of Health Data Research UK, the institute for health and biomedical informatics research established by the Medical Research Council and other funders in 2017.
He has published widely in the field of health care law. He was co-author of a chapter on ‘Ethics and the Social Contract for Genomics in the NHS’ in the Chief Medical Officer’s report Generation Genome. He gave the annual J Kenyon Mason lecture for 2017 on ‘New Bearings in Health Research Ethics: Towards a Social Contract Paradigm’, which can be viewed on YouTube at https://youtu.be/IkaKkb3Yc3E.
He has held a number of public service roles include chairing the Nuffield Council on Bioethics (the UK’s national bioethics committee from 2012-17) and the UK’s Human Genetics Commission from 2009-2012. He was a panel member on the Morecambe Bay Investigation into maternal and neonatal deaths (2013-5). He was a member of a local NHS research ethics committee from 1992-99 (two years as chair). Between 1998 and 2013 he served as chair of a number of NHS organisations in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, including providers, commissioners and a Strategic Health Authority.
